Spring Flower Festivals in Korea 2010

After what felt like a never ending winter (we received 15 cm. of snow this past week!), today is the start of the Korean Peninsula’s first spring flower festival! Spring is finally (almost) here and it’s time to check out some of the many festivals celebrating the sansuyu (cornus flower), maehwa (flowering apricot) and, of course, the beotkkeot (cherry blossom). Without further delay, here are the best spring flower festivals in Korea!

Gwangyang Maehwa (Apricot Blossom) Festival
(Maehwa Village, South Jeolla Province)
March 13-21
Outside Jeju Island, this is Korea’s first spring flower festival. Located in Maehwa Village, near Gwangyang city, see about 83 acres of apricot trees, which cover the Baegunsan mountains with their white blossoms. In addition to flower watching, the festival features lots of music, dance and “experience programs.”

Gurye Sansuyu (Cornus Flower) Festival
(Gurye, South Jeolla Province)
March 18-21
Gurye is famous for its teas, liquors and food made from the cornus flower, also known as the Japanese Dogwood. These flowers are said to protect the liver and skin. Gurye is a picturesque farming town located between Mt. Jirisan and the Seomjin River. In addition to the beautiful yellow flowers, visitors can enjoy performances, hands-on programs, fireworks and a national arm wrestling competition! There are also three important Buddhist temples and the Jirisan Mountain Hot Springs Resort nearby.
(more info: call +82-61-1330 or visit here [Korean only].)

Jeju King Cherry Blossom Festival
(Citizen Welfare Area, Jeju Island Special Self-Governing Province)
March 26-28
The Seogwipo area of southern Jeju Island is famous for its king cherry trees, known as the largest of the spring flowering favorites. Jeju’s festival includes music and typical island hospitality, with other spring flowers – such as sansuyu – also in abundance.
(more info: call +82-64-1330 or visit here [Korean only].)

Gwangju Spring Flower Expo
(Gwangju, South Jeolla Province)
March 26-April 4
It’s a bit different than seeing a natural landscape of flowers or flowering trees, but the city of Gwangju in South Jeolla Province aims to get a head start on nature with its Flower Expo, taking place at the Kim Daejung Convention Center. In addition to the flower shows enjoy a decorative flower function contest.
(more info: call +82-62-611-2124 or visit here [Korean only].)

Jinhae Gunhangje (Naval Port) Festival
(Jinhae, South Gyeongsang Province)
April 1-April 11 (UPDATED DATES)
The big daddy of all of the spring flower festivals, Jinhae’s world-famous flowering cherry trees boast the world’s largest concentration of the spring favorite. The festival dates back to 1952 and celebrates Korea’s greatest naval hero, Admiral Yi Sun-shin. At the festival, climb aboard a recreated turtle ship, a modern naval ship, view the Naval Academy Museum, and just enjoy the beautiful harbor and cherry trees! Don’t miss the “Romance Walk” near Jinhae Station. Read a prior post about the festival here.
Note: Please note that the dates were recently changed!
(more info: call +82-61-1330 or visit here.)

Hwagae Marketplace Cherry Blossoms Festival
(Hadong, South Gyeongsang Province)
April 2-4
Situated near Ssanggyesa Temple in Hadong Village, this festival is famous for the beautiful riverside road also known as “Marriage Road.” The festival is located near the Hwagae Marketplace, which is famous for serving area delicacies, such as king crab broth and sliced raw sweetfish. If you’d prefer to stick to the cherry  blossoms, there are plenty of those to see as well.
(more info: call +82-55-1330 or visit here.)

Yeouido Spring Flowers Festival
(Yeouido Island, Seoul)
April 7-11
Seoul’s best location to see cherry blossoms is on Yeouido Island. Specifically, the road behind the National Assembly building is lined with hundreds of mature cherry trees that were planted before many people even lived on the island. For a few short days every spring, the island erupts into a riot of pale pink blossoms, and some four million people are expected to visit.
(more info: call +82-2-1330 or visit here.)

Cheongpunghoban Cherry Blossoms Festival
(Cheongpungho Lake, North Chungcheong Province)
April 9-11
Lake Cheongpungho is the site of this spring festival, which features not just cherry blossoms, but also azaleas, forsythias and other wild flowers. Beyond the beautiful spring blooms, the festival features great performances, exhibitions, competitions and various activities on the nearby lake.
(more info: call +82-43-1330 or visit here.)

Jeju Canola Blossoms Festival
(Siminbokji Town, Jeju Island Self-Governing Province)
April 10-11
Jeju Island’s southern location means it’s the first place to experience spring, and the burst of spring color. Starting in February, Jeju’s landscape is covered in the bright yellow yuchae, or canola blossoms. At this festival, visitors can purchase various locally-made canola flower items and celebrate the coming of spring!

Hello Mumai,
Thanks for your note. We were supposed to have cherry blossoms now in Yeouido! But... some late cold weather has delayed them a bit. Perhaps towards the end of your visit you'll be able to see them on Yeouido Island, which you can reach via subway lines 5 and 9.

Best, Matt

Anyeong! Thanks for your note. Late May or early June is still a wonderful time to visit. I think it will just start to feel like summer then... but it's hard to say. We've had such a strangely cold spring thus far... I fear it will skip real spring and go straight to summer. Anyhow, I'll keep my fingers crossed. Best, Matt

Hi Amanda,
Well... the autumn leaves here in Korea are pretty spectacular, so I'd suggest going where you can see them. The mountains are always a great bet, but even inside Seoul there are many ginkgo trees (called eunhaeng namu here) that turn bright gold. In terms of winter, since Korea can get a fair amount of snowfall, I enjoy the mountains (again, but it can be a little bit dangerous), ski resorts, etc... Happy traveling, Matt

I will be travel to Korea next year 17.3.2010, is there any chance to see the Spring flower blossom? where can I see?

October 13 2010 23:48 pm

Matt

Hi Veronica,
Thanks for your note. Hmmm... obviously the specific dates change every year depending on the weather, and we've been having some very quirky weather lately, but it seems like you'll be in Korea during the earliest days of the spring flower season. So... should you wish to see some spring flowers, your best bet is to head south to some of the festivals in Gwangywang or Jeju, as they probably won't bloom in Seoul until the very end of March or early April.

Good luck!

Hi,
I will be in South Korea next year 5-12 March. Where would I be able to see cherry blossoms or any flower blossoms during that time? Thanks

November 09 2010 23:47 pm

Matt

Hi Catherine,

Sadly, I think you will be here a little bit too early to see the spring flowers. The earliest festivals begin on Jeju Island and the south coast around mid- to late March. They occur a week or two later here in Seoul. But who knows... the weather has been so wacky lately, that you may catch some early blossoms. Again, your best bet is to head south!

Hello Matt!

Any spring flowers to view cos I’ll be there in S. Korea between April 25 to May7th 2011? Thanks

November 28 2010 22:23 pm

Matt

Hi Vivian!

Hmmm... Typically, the cherry blossoms bloom in Seoul around mid-April (earlier in the southern areas). You might be a little bit late, but even if the cherry trees are winding down, there should be some other blossoms for you to see. Good luck!

Best, Matt

Hey. I enjoyed reading your postings. I should have stumble upon this before I went to Korea last October. Gosh I badly want to go back there. It was a one-week vacation but I felt like Seoul is askimg me to go back right away cause there is so much more to see.

I was thinking of visiting during the winter season..hahah but after my experience last oct..think NOT. hows the temperature during spring?

November 28 2010 22:18 pm

Matt

Hi Fran,

Thanks for your note. Yes, there's definitely too much here to see in just a week. I just had two visitors over the past couple of months and both were here for about a week. It was really hard to choose what to see and do. Spring temperatures are similar to what you experienced in the fall... maybe a bit warmer? Most agree that Spring and Fall are the best times to visit Korea!

Best, Matt

I will be in Seoul March 22 to 25 for a business trip and then wanted to travel in Korea until the 31st when I must fly back from Seoul. So that gives me only Sat to Wednesday ( March 26 to 31st). I very much want to see the cherry blossoms. What would suggest would be the best location during this time. Would Jeju Island and/or Jinhae make sense?

February 26 2011 14:02 pm

Matt

Hi Howard,
Thanks for your note. You might be in luck... this year's Jinhae Naval Port Festival (the nation's biggest cherry blossom event) is scheduled to occur 4/1~4/10. You'd best check the weather reports in the upcoming weeks in case the weather compels those finicky cherry trees to blossom early or late. As you suggest, should the cherries be late this year, there are a number of other great spring flower festivals in Korea, namely the yellow canola blossoms in Jeju and Gurye and Gwangyang's apricot blossom fest. Here's a link to a post about last year's events to give you some more info. I'll be posting new information shortly so please stay tuned. ;)
