Where and When to See Autumn Color in Korea
Perhaps you’re wondering, where and when to see autumn color in Korea? Well, earlier this week I had the pleasure of visiting Seoraksan mountain (설악산) on South Korea’s northeastern coast, and saw for myself the first colorful leaves of autumn changing, especially at the higher altitudes. And thanks to David Hasenick’s blog (for the second year running), here are two “first color” and “peak color” maps for 2010 for those who hope to see some of Korea’s spectacular “danpoong” (단풍) for themselves. (FYI: If you’re interested to know where the banner photo was taken, it’s of Ewha University in western Seoul’s Sinchon neighborhood. Definitely one of the best places to see fall color… and spring color, for that matter.)
Also, here are a few links to previous posts with more information about where and when to see autumn color in Korea:

Hi Christy,
Thanks for your note. Well... looking around the city these days, the trees are definitely turning. I think I'll have to make a trip up to Mt. Gwanaksan some day very soon. I'd hate to miss what's got to be one of the most spectacular views of crimson, orange and yellow hillsides in the city! Hope you'll write again.
Best, Matt

You take that shot of Ewha?

Hey Robert. Yeah, I think it was early last November. As you already know, the neighborhood has a nice mix of subjects and styles to shoot.

Hi Atul,
As you might guess, this is hard to predict. However, in my experience, early-to-mid October is always a lovely time to be here. The weather should be quite pleasant. In terms of seeing fall foliage, the Seoul area typically sees its first autumn color in mid-October with peak color occurring by the end of the month or the first week of November. Here's last year's post to give you a more detailed look. So if you can delay your trip to the week of Oct. 17, that seems like a better bet. Also, if it's too early in Seoul, Mt. Seoraksan in Gangwon Province typically sees color about a week or two before Seoul... but beware of the autumn crowds. Its a gorgeous mountain and national park, but VERY popular for leaf viewing.
Have fun! Best, Matt

Hi Matt,
Glad to see your informative blog! I plan to visit my friend at Seoul around end of Oct to early Nov 2013, is it the best time to see the golden foliage? and during that period is it a very busy period for university student? (mid term exam)? I don’t want to ask my friend as I would love to make a surprise visit :) Thanks!

Hi Mia,
Yes, late Oct to early Nov should be perfect! In terms of your friend's schedule, I think you're right that it would probably coincide with exams...
